Frequently Asked Questions
What is a prebiotic?
Prebiotics are the ‘food’ for the good bacteria in the gut, which in horses, breakdown and digest the fibre in the hindgut.
What is the microbiome?
The microbiome is defined as the population of bacteria, fungi etc present in your horse’s gut.
What do fructo-oligosaccharides actually do?
Short chain fructo-oligosaccharides (shortened to FOS in a lot of literature) are a type of Prebiotic which is unable to be broken down/digested by the enzymes within your horse’s digestive tract. Specific types of good bacteria in the tract are the only ones which can access & utilise the goodness (energy) resulting in the good bacteria thriving & replicating to outnumber the bad bacteria. FOS are highly effective in supporting healthy digestion throughout the entire digestive tract from stomach to hindgut, particularly in veteran horses.
What is the NRC (National Research Council)?
The NRC is the Equine Nutritionist’s ‘bible’ providing the known nutrient requirements for horses by age, weight, workload and reproductive status. Expressed in tables indicating the minimum amounts needed to sustain normal health, production & performance of horses. It is used by Nutritionists & feed companies to calculate how much energy, nutrients and minerals should be fed & in what ratio/proportion they should be fed.
Do I need to give my horse any other supplements?
To maintain good nutritional health & your horse/pony is receiving adequate amounts of forage, All Inclusive is sufficient, other than a daily addition of salt.
